Blueberry PIe
Aug 15, 2008
This morning Emma & I went blueberry picking for the fourth time this summer. She begged me to make a blueberry pie, so I told her if she picked enough berries I would. I had already decided to make Haitian food tonight as a treat so the pie added one more treat to the evening!
For the pie crust I used the recipe in “Nourishing Traditions” by Sally Fallon. I can’t recommend this book enough! If you’re at all interested in eating healthily this book is a must read! Her pie crust recipe uses butter and egg yolk instead of shortening. I love this recipe because it’s healthier and much easier to roll out.

Grape-sicles
Aug 15, 2008
Need a healthy, easy & cool summer snack? Grape-sicles are one of my favorites! Just throw some grapes (organic is best if you can find them, but if not try to stay away from grapes grown in Chile) in the freezer and by the next day you have frozen grape treats! This is an especially great treat for kids! I’m planning on saving some to eat during my home birth in November. Yum!

Easy Garden Pizzas
Aug 07, 2008
We made up these tasty pizzas today and they turned out great! They’re SO easy!
Here are the layers:
Slice of homemade whole-wheat sourdough bread
Olive oil sprinkled over bread
Basil leaves
Cherry tomatoes sliced in half
Mozzarella cheese
Cook in toaster oven for a few minutes then let cool a bit. The basil absolutely MAKES this! Basil just tastes like pure summertime! My 4 1/2 year-old even liked these!

Mmmmmm Blueberries!
Jul 29, 2008
Blueberry season has begun here in Michigan! This past week we went blueberry picking at the local U-pick place a few miles from home. Blueberries are my favorite fruit and here’s why:
1. They are one of the lesser sprayed fruits (low on the pesticide list).
2. They’re relatively inexpensive here ($1/pound this year for U-pick)
3. They are easy to pick and there are no stems, pits or peels to remove.
4. To stock up on them for the rest of the year you can just rinse them, throw them into a freezer ziplock bag and freeze them! They break apart easily even when frozen.
5. They are extremely high in antioxidants.
6. They’re so versatile! Throw them in granola, oatmeal, a smoothie, yogurt, a pie, cover pound cake with them or just eat them plain.
7. They’re delicious!

Rotten Eggs
Jun 20, 2008
I always wondered how I would tell if an egg had gone bad or not. Would it smell bad? Would it look different? Well, the other day I finally found out. I had TWO rotten eggs in the same dozen and they were HORRIBLE! I have never smelled something so awful in my life! The white part was pure liquid and the yolk was pure BLACK! They were unmistakable as rotten. I guess now I won’t have to wonder! Blechk!
