  • Blue potatoes?


  • You guessed it Robin! I knew if anyone from a farm saw it they’d probably know. :) This is a new one for me. This is our first year eating heirloom vegetables and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at all the colors they come in! Fantastic!


  • Blue potatoes? What makes them blue? Do they taste like normal potatoes? Do you pay a premium for blue? Is there an advantage to eating blue?


  • DaveJay, as far as I know blue potatoes aren’t much different than regular potatoes. It sure is a fun change of color though! Since joining our local CSA farm I’ve noticed that many vegetables come in multiple colors. When we picked beans this summer at the farm we picked purple beans, white beans, green beans and purple-striped beans! Tomatoes come in a lot of colors as well. I just made some tomato sauce yesterday with green, yellow, orange and red tomatoes.

    If you visit your local farmer’s market you will probably find a variety of heirloom vegetables there. I’m not sure if the heirloom varieties would cost more or not. One of the advantages of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) membership is that we pay one lump sum for our year’s produce and it works out to be pretty inexpensive.


  • Blue potatoes turn gray when cooked and mashed.  They taste much better than they look.  They’re not the best for mashed potatoes, they’re a little too waxy. 

    We grow purple and orange cauliflower.  It doesn’t taste any different.  It’s a great way to get our customers’ kids to try something new because they look “too cool!”


  • Thanks Robin! :) I used the blue potatoes in a broccoli-potato-leek soup and they were pretty good. That bright purple color just made my day!
